Roxanne really helps to make sure you are getting the best out of your workout by guiding you on technique and form. It's a wonderful place to go, and all of the groups of people I've taken class with are kind and inviting.

What this studio actually is

Four people, maximum

Four people, maximum

Privates and duets are the core of the studio, and the largest group we ever run is four across multiple apparatus. Every session is built around your body, not a class plan.

Instructors, not a franchise cert

Instructors, not a franchise cert

Six instructors comprehensively certified on all apparatus, with degrees in Kinesiology, Sports Science and Dance plus NASM personal training. The lineage runs through Ellie Herman and Shari Berkowitz.

Whatever your body arrived with

We work with rehabilitation, neurological conditions, athletes and performers, and people starting from nothing. A tailored routine is carefully and thoughtfully crafted either way.

The method

What is classical Pilates?

We offer classical Pilates with a modern approach. Here is what that means before you book.

  • The original system

Joseph Pilates built a defined sequence of exercises over 100 years ago, worked on spring-loaded apparatus rather than on the floor alone. Classical means we teach that system, in that order.

  • More than the reformer

The reformer is one machine among several. Sessions also use the wunda chair, the cadillac or tower, and the barrels, which is why our instructors are certified on all apparatus rather than one.

  • Where the modern part comes in

The exercises hold up. The understanding of bodies has moved on. Sessions apply current body mechanics to the classical repertoire, which is what makes the method workable for a recovering knee or a 70-year-old spine.

  • Why it is taught one to one

Precision is the whole point, and precision needs eyes on you and hands-on correction. That is why a group here is capped at four and why we lead with privates.

How this differs from a reformer class of twenty

In a large reformer class you follow a plan written for the room. Here an instructor watches your body and adjusts the work as it goes, on whichever apparatus suits the exercise. It is a premium, tailored approach that larger classes cannot match, and it is why most people start with privates rather than a group.

Five ways to train here

Which session should you book?

Everyone starts with an Initial Assessment. After that you choose the format that fits: one to one, a duet, a group of no more than four, or online.

Initial Assessment

Where everyone starts. 75 minutes.

A posture evaluation plus a first session on the apparatus, so your instructor knows what your body is doing before anything gets programmed. No experience assumed.

Private Session

One body, one instructor.

One to one on the full apparatus with a certified instructor. The session is built around you, with hands-on correction throughout. Suits beginners, rehabilitation, and anyone who wants the method done properly.

Duet Private

Bring one person.

The same one-to-one attention shared between two, at a lower rate per person. Book with your partner ready, or email us and we will pair you.

Mixed Level Semi Private Group

Never more than four.

Work across multiple apparatus with personalised instruction and hands-on guidance, in a room of at most four people. Mixed level, so experience is not assumed.

Virtual Session

From home, or from our apparatus.

Taught live over video from your home with Master Instructor Roxanne Graziano-Guido, or from the studio using our full equipment with a remote teacher.

Our story

On Piedmont Ave since 2012

Roxanne Graziano-Guido was comprehensively certified by Ellie Herman Studio in San Francisco in 2004. Early in her career she was invited to assist in the opening of Element Soins, the first studio in Paris, and taught there alongside an international team. She founded New Classic Pilates on Piedmont Ave in 2012.

That is still how the studio runs. Advanced study under Shari Berkowitz, six instructors certified on the full apparatus, rooms that stay at four people or fewer, and a method kept classical while the application follows what is currently understood about body mechanics.

A client's story

Seven years on, still here

Lisa came to the studio without a fitness habit. Seven years later she is still training here, and she traces her current interest in health and fitness back to her first sessions with Roxanne.

Working with your body

One to one, from the first assessment

Every new client starts with a 75-minute Initial Assessment and posture evaluation. What your instructor sees there is what your routine is built from, and it gets revisited as your body changes.

  • 75-minute Initial Assessment with posture evaluation, $175
  • A routine built for your body, on the full apparatus
  • Hands-on correction throughout every session
  • Instructors with rehabilitation, kinesiology and NASM backgrounds

We regularly work with post-injury and rehabilitation clients, neurological and chronic conditions, athletes and performers, and people who have never done Pilates. Tell us what is going on with your body when you book your first session, and it will be in the plan before you arrive.
